You do not have to learn everything called AI at once. A student who wants help studying needs a different starting point from someone who wants to build machine-learning models. Start with one useful task, understand the basics and make a small project. This 30-day plan is a foundation you can adapt, not a promise to become an AI engineer in one month.
Choose your first path
Using AI: learn to give clear instructions, check outputs and apply tools to writing, research or spreadsheets.
Building AI systems: add programming, data handling, mathematics and model evaluation. You can explore the first path without coding, but technical roles require deeper skills. Do not confuse knowing a chatbot interface with knowing machine learning.
Days 1–7: understand the basics
Learn the difference between AI, machine learning and generative AI. Keep a short glossary in your own words. Practise on everyday tasks such as explaining a topic, drafting a polite message or summarising your own notes. Check the result against a reliable source. Notice where the tool invents details or misunderstands your request.
Free resource: IBM SkillsBuild
IBM SkillsBuild offers free learning, including introductory AI material. Start with foundational content rather than collecting advanced course titles. Some activities require an account or have audience-specific access. Use the official catalogue to check current availability. After each topic, write one example of where you could use it and one limitation.
Days 8–14: practise better instructions
Include the task, context, facts, desired format and limits. For example: 'Turn these five product facts into a 60-word description for first-time buyers. Use simple English. Do not add features that are not listed.' Compare two versions and explain why one is better. Keep a prompt notebook with the input, output and corrections; copied prompts alone are not the skill.
Days 15–21: build one small project
Choose a project close to your life: a revision question bank, a customer FAQ draft or a product comparison worksheet using verified facts. Define success before starting. An FAQ project might need ten accurate answers, no invented promises and a clear instruction for questions it cannot answer. Ask someone else to try it and record where they struggle.
Days 22–30: test, improve and explain
Create ten test cases, including unclear questions and missing information. Fix the weak parts. Record what you did yourself and where AI helped. Prepare a short walkthrough showing the problem, process, checks and limitations. This gives you something useful to discuss in an internship interview or when helping a small business.
A daily routine that fits college or work
Spend ten minutes learning one concept, twenty minutes applying it and ten minutes checking the result. If you only have twenty minutes, reduce the task size rather than skipping the checks. Keep one main resource and one project for the month. Switching between many courses can feel productive without producing usable work.
What to learn next if you want to code
Move on to Python basics, spreadsheets and SQL, then introductory statistics and machine learning. Learn why training and test data are kept separate, how to compare a model with a simple baseline and how errors affect users. Work with public practice datasets. Do not put a model into an important real-world process just because a tutorial ran successfully.
How to choose a course without wasting money
Check prerequisites, sample lessons, practical assignments and whether feedback is available. Look for a clear syllabus instead of salary promises. Confirm whether access, assessments and certificates are free or paid. A certificate can record learning, but you should also be able to explain and demonstrate the skill independently.
Frequently asked questions
Can I learn AI without coding? Yes for many practical uses; building models requires additional technical learning.
Can I learn on a phone? You can study concepts and practise some tools, while coding and detailed projects are easier on a computer.
How long will it take? Basic familiarity can develop through regular practice, but professional ability depends on your path and experience.
